Beware: the recipe makes a huge batch, and even though the comments said so, I ignored the warnings to cut the recipe proportionately. I now have a big bowl of unused batter sitting in my fridge!

Also, the turnips end up not having a flavour at all (once they have simmered in the soup), but if you are averse to them, any other root vegetable (including carrots) would probably do the trick!
